http://wnpr.org/post/facing-49-million- ... bankruptcy

Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin’s new $613 million city budget needs at least $49 million in extra state and private-sector aid to stave off ugly choices that could include bankruptcy.

Hartford will declare bankruptcy sometime in the next 5 years....Connecticut will do it within the next 10.....rumor has it there are already lobbyist on the hill setting the ground work for state bankruptcy....they literally can't tax much more....people have been leaving in droves for years......bye bye state pensions.....

BTW, Hartford was the Richest city during Reconstruction.....

Ya'll should be keeping an eye on this....

This came up in a conversation with the wife.

Her, "I play simcity. I know."

The SimCity comparison holds true - look at the number of Casinos in CT - and they're asking for more.....

2 casinos? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... onnecticut

I go there every year. They're within a mile of each other, on Injun land. What's the problem?

In simcity, when you jack up the taxes, you build casinos as a distraction to keep your citizens from fleeing.

Tons of CA cities have gone bankrupt.

Even though everyone likes to point to social programs, they are not the problem, pensions are. Of course, once people see that pensions are the problem, they love to think of the obese bureaucrats that do nothing but make your life miserable when they are at work and then continue to make your life miserable once they retire by sucking up all your tax dollars. Alas, the real bulk of pension dollars goes to everyone's favorite heroes, police and fire. They retire between like 40 and 45 on full pension, and then go work for another 20 years in a different department getting paid by more tax dollars. Then, upon final retirement, they're getting $200k/year.

I don't think that anyone should be denied a pension, in fact, I think its a much better reward for working than the current 401k paradigm. However, what is common now is outright abuse of the system

If the pensions are unsustainable, I don't think I'd say they're better than an IRA.

Cities aren't going bankrupt because of someone's 401k.

Hartford may be hurting but Greenwich and the rest of the Gold Coast are doing just fine. They're like different countries. It's the difference between the south Bronx and Scarsdale. NJ will go broke before CT, and the pension problem will be forcibly resolved before NJ goes broke.

This whole thing is more likely to accelerate the death of the middle class in the states bordering NYC.

We should federalize the pension problems and give these people the same amount that a disabled veteran gets. NOBODY is going to look good throwing a tantrum and proclaiming they deserve more than a guy, who became totally disabled from an IED explosion, because he drove a school bus for fifteen years.

People should be given enough to get by, but they shouldn't have the right to run cities and states into the ground with economic vampirism. Residents will move rather than paying twice as much taxes for no return on investment to keep up with these outrageous pension amounts.
