China only has about twenty or so nuclear powered SSBN/SSGN/SSN's

But they have something like a hundred diesel electric SSK's, which are shorter ranged, but much quieter.

Japan and Korea are building up a large force of state o' the art SSK's.

India is rapidly fielding nuclear powered SSBN/SSN's as well as new SSK's

Vietnam has Russian made SSK's
Whose got the upper hand now, and who do you favor in said submarine arms race going forward?
Hard to say.

You don't really know how the submarine forces would perform until the shooting starts.

Submarines are dangerous in of themselves, so everybody can sink everybody.

Would come down to a mixture of who has the best tech and crews.

The Chinese are at an advantage if they are defensive near to their shore.

The further the Chinese try to project power the more perilous it becomes for them.

The Japanese and Koreans have NATO level of technology. Very quiet. Deep diving and best SONAR.

The Russian and Chinese made subs are not as quiet, but more plentiful, quantity having a quality of its own.

In the event of a China Seas War, the Chinese would probably have to try to blockade Japan.

So it would be Chinese U-boat wolfpacks using numbers to overwhelm Japanese high tech.

The Japanese could either try to defend, or counter blockade against the Chinese.

One subs start sinking commercial shipping, said commercial shipping is going to shore to wait it out.

Then you have to fight the submarine war to see who breaks whose blockade.

See neither China nor Japan has the power projection to defeat each other on land.

But both a totally dependent on the sea lanes, particularly Japan.

Surface to surface warfare would be costly, so they'd probably keep the fleets close to shore and protected.

Thus why submarines are the arm of decision, because the submarines are really the only leverage.

The only way to win would be to control the sea to bring the enemy to their knees economically.

Just something I find interesting, here is Isikoff discussing the Russian hack. Note that what is discussed is that "a DNC Staffer tasked with tasked with researching Manafort".
