Thank Greenies for the plastic bag. Fucking Enviros pushed that shit on us in the 80s as an Environmentally conscious alternative to paper bags that caused deforestation.

Greenies are nuts.

Depends on a lot of factors. Just guessing here, but I'd guess they are neutral or better than cloth bags.

One thing I learned in environmental science all those years ago is that those studies are bogus because people pick and choose what they want to count. To make cloth bags seem better, one might ignore the impact of plastic bag re-use and the terrible environmental impact of cotton farming.

Today (Saturday 22 September 2018), the Co-op announced an end to single-use plastic. It will see around 60 million plastic carrier bags removed in a phased rollout and replaced with an environmentally-friendly alternative. The move is part of a new hard-hitting ethical strategy to be launched later this week by the Co-op, which will tackle plastic pollution as well as food waste, healthy eating, saving energy and trading fairly.

The blue-print sets out how the Co-op will ban single-use own-brand plastic products and reduce its overall use of plastic packaging within five years and stop using hard to recycle materials, like black plastic.

The supermarkets are trying to out compete each other on phasing out single use plastics. Frozen food store Iceland has committed itself to being plastic free by 2025.
Promising developments from some of the worst offenders.

It's interesting living in the PNW and seeing how people do things differently. These mofos plastic bag everything. My favorite is when they plastic bag iceberg lettuce or the more common, package of meat. It's something that's wrapped in plastic, that gets wrapped in plastic, that gets put into another plastic bag when they bag it at the cashier.

Meh, just eliminate single use plastics by public pressure on the supermarkets.
Banning can come later when alternative packaging has been developed.
Good old fashioned deposits on plastic bottles etc would go a long way towards getting recycling upto 100%.

Or, you know, you could mind your own fucking business.

Plastic bags are better than the alternatives we have now.

Using only easy to recycle plastics is starting to be seriously talked about.
It's crazy that there are so many different plastics used which have varying degees of recycle-ability.
Standardise it all...
