Power companies generally generate power according to what is most profitable. It's laughable to insinuate wind and solar are equivalent in any way to traditional power production. If it were, these companies would switch over to wind and solar. That's not to say profitability should be the determining factor as to what kinds of power we generate, but don't pretend like wind and solar are in any way practical or feasible for a modern industrial nation. You can run a fucking automobile factory on wind power either. It's not worthwhile for quite a lot of reasons.

Taking advantage of all federal and Washington state government subsidies

Solar would pay for itself in 20 years.

That doesn't count the cost imposed on the power company to have to deal with all the shitty power these people dump on the grid. Even then, it's only economical because we subsidize the manufacturing of the equipment and then give people tax incentives to switch to it. In the big picture, it's just stupid.

In space, solar is fucking awesome. Here on Earth.. for most applications.. nah. I think it's great for homesteading where you are not hooking it up to the grid and using wind/solar to pump and heat water, run some lights, etc. That's fine. Even then, it's not really economical -- just a good idea to be more off the grid.
