New Internet Rules

Hopefully this thread remains short. Archiving p1-3 from old one and adding to it.

Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and President Obama are taking one more stab at retaining control of the Internet before they leave Washington.

Harry Reid and President Obama are circulating a petition to remove the hold on FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel so that she can be reconfirmed before Congress recesses next week.

In short, long before "fake news" became a major media topic, the US government was already planning its legally-backed crackdown on anything it would eventually label "fake news."

Fast forward to December 8, when the "Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act" passed in the Senate, quietly inserted inside the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Conference Report.

And now, following Friday's Obama signing of the NDAA on Friday evening, the Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act is now law.

The first priority is developing a whole-of-government strategy for countering THE foreign propaganda and disinformation being wages against us and our allies by our enemies.

It is fucked up. Batter in the hole is the "Licensed Journalist" label, aka State approved, to be added to their collective bylines.

I want to be amazed at the fervor behind the "fake news" movement, especially considering that the Establishment Media was so thoroughly exposed as collaborators this election cycle, but I just can muster effort to put the low bar expectation on the public to make it anything but predictable. I mean who the hell even buys a Washington Post let alone trust them as a sole initiating source.

I actually think licensing journalists would be a good thing. Not like it matters though. 90% of them aren't even journalists.

Who would be issuing the licenses?

More control

I guess a lot of you who think I'm some kind of authoritarian statist would probably assume I think this is great, but I'm totally against a change like this.

Also, since this author is a tech CEO, he's obviously looking for a project to profit on

Barbara Boxer and company were trying to do some shit like this a few years ago. I think it was that they wanted credentials for journalists, so they could silence those they deemed were not journalists, and therefor were not protected by the concept of a free press.
