That Kaepernick story about him willing to stand has been retracted I believe, he's denying it on twitter at least

I see now why he is the president and I am not

So are you saying that Trump just wanted the NFL to sign Kaepernick and that he wasn't just playing to his base?

I was under the impression that Kaepernick had agreed to stand when I said that

But I definitely think he was playing to his base more than anything else, which is why I wasn't sure what he had to gain at first, beyond re-solidifying his support and using his bully pulpit to amplify a national dialogue.

I suppose it's possible he knew that the media would eat it up, additional NFL players would stand against Trump and the NFL would eventually demand the players to stand, but who knows

What Trump has to gain from this could be simply being a troll. Anyways he has "told" Pence to leave the Colts/49ers game so again, he is still making a big deal out of this:
President Donald Trump tweeted afterward that he asked Pence to leave the stadium.
"I asked @VP Pence to leave stadium if any players kneeled, disrespecting our country. I am proud of him and @SecondLady Karen," Trump tweeted.

As soon as I heard about Pence leaving the game I thought to myself oh this is of Trump's doing, for sure. Surprised/not surprised he owned up to it

Niners players have knelt every game this season. The only reason he went was to leave, and drum up some more distraction.

Kabuki theater indeed.
