The reason why the Americans are getting flak from the Russians, is because the Russians do not believe that the Americans are willing to fight, whereas the Chinese drink their own bath water and would in fact be crazy enough to take it there, hence why the Russians don't even look at them funny, never mind calling them out with overt aggression.

Actually I think that Putin and the siloviks close to him have started to believe their own dreams and think (at least say to themselves) that the US is out there to get them. Politicians start believing their own lies at some point. And why wouldn't they. After plundering so much wealth of your country, any leader would look over his shoulders.

Hence when some Russians protested when Putin made himself President for the third time, Putin thinks that it was everything to do with the US, a "colour revolution" manipulated By the CIA perhaps. Or Hillary. Hence when we talk about Russians using the Gerasimov doctrine, one has to note that Gerasimov's classic article started from that the US was doing it, hence they have to respond to the threat that US poses them.

Best defence is an active offense.

Not with conventional arms and warfare, but using other kinds of arenas.

There's no threat to the Russians from America, because America is not really threatened by the Russians, the Americans know it, the Russians know it, this is all just bluster and posturing for domestic consumption, when in reality, the Russians are not in Americas league anymore, and as a result, the Americans can pretty much just ignore them, which is really the thing which is bothering the Russians, it's not fear of invasion, but rather fear of irrelevance.
