I'm reminded of the Berlin Wall and the fall of the iron curtain.

That all started when Austria and Hungary did away with their border. Little out of the way border no one really paid attention to. I think that was in the Spring or Summer. People started going to the Berlin Wall and protesting their wall, the iron curtain still containing them. They stayed and continued to protest.

By Christmas the Iron Curtain completely ended as a matter of official policy.
