Everyone remember Clarke's 3rd law? "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." The phone you carry in your pocket would be magic to the most sophisticated human of 300 years ago. The wouldn't have the slightest clue how it works, they could pull it apart and still not understand. That's basically the stage we are at with the Large Hadron Collider, smashing matter as hard as we can and trying to figure it out by looking at the shattered pieces.
