the kinetic energy of the round is the product of the mass of the round and the velocity squared.
any increase in the velocity has the same effect as the square root of the same increase in the mass.
KE = M * V^2
10 gram bullet at 500 m/s = .01 * 500^2 = 2500 J
double the mass of the round,
20 gram bullet at 500 m/s = .02 * 500^2 = 5000 J
double the velocity,
10 gram bullet at 1000 m/s = .01 * 1000^2 = 10,000 J
Doubling the mass doubles the energy. Doubling the velocity quadruples the energy.
Velocity matters more.

When the bullet leaves the barrel, its acceleration stops.
Using the equation for force, F = MA, the force is zero. The bullet is in free fall with nothing but inertia to carry it before it hits the ground.

If you run backwards really really fast you could outrun the bullet. The problem is that it is very difficult to outrun a bullet without proper training. We are talking about doing several 5ks a year to get prepared. Not for the faint of heart.

He's an IT slave, Okie. Don't be harsh on him. He didn't have to take calculus and physics for engineers. If he took those at all, they were the survey course versions.

But I do know that where 2 objects are moving the same speed, the one with more mass will hit harder.
