Lots of people make a living in rural areas. Maybe it's more that you don't want the lifestyle that goes with it. Doesn't mean they are all uneducated losers.SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 6:54 amIf it makes you feel better, I’d much rather live rural. I just can’t make a living there.

Without the starting capital to fund an actual business - which would be a farm, or gas station - no, I couldn’t. I don’t like urban environments, and just tolerate suburban.PartyOf5 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 7:41 amLots of people make a living in rural areas. Say I open my little country store or gas station, I’m instantly priced out by Mobil or Shell or a few others. I do the farm thing, and I’m living on the government subsidy teet, just scraping by without a few million to fund a commercial operation.
It’s simply not an option, unless you’re going off-grid. Which I’m not committed enough to do yet.

College-educated millennials are tenant farming all over rural America right now. We just saw the largest increase in new under-30 farmers in almost a century.

Source? Because that's probably kids inheriting the operation from Boomers.Speaker to Animals wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 8:09 amCollege-educated millennials are tenant farming all over rural America right now. We just saw the largest increase in new under-30 farmers in almost a century.

Your tag is suburban farmer but you don't want to farm and you don't like the suburbs.
It is possible to live in a rural area that is not so far in the middle of nowhere that you have more career choices than owning a gas station or a farm.

I do want to farm, actually. I want to build a complete homestead.
I just have to accumulate retirement capital to do it, because I know that I could never support my family out there.
It’s not that people want to live in cities - though some do. It’s that coming out of high school, you can’t earn a living in the sticks, unless you’re born into an operation. There is simply no job market there.
The echoes of the Industrial Revolution are still reverberating through our society. The economics shifted, and made starting a rural life next to impossible, without giving up a huge amount of income.

If only. But we’re still saddled with about a billion Boomers that refuse to give up the reins. Telecommuting is only an option for senior execs and Indians.Speaker to Animals wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 9:59 amRemote working. Telecommute.

Freelancing would be nice. I’m actually looking into some of that now.
