So if the tax payers are shelling out eighty grand for college, what are the kids doing that makes that a more even trade?

Ways to go to college,
  • 1. pay a pile of money
    2. join the army
    3. give back to the community in the form of ____________, and get rewarded free college
    4. get straight A's and get a scholarship
    5. be a sports star
I would also factor in the taxes collected returns on the investment. We paid back many times over through the difference between the taxes we pay vs. what we would have paid without the degree.

I have no objection to any of the above, but it still makes no sense for society to not subsidize at least the degrees we need the most. I'd prefer educational costs in general to be subsidized by society, because civilized and it's a lot better to live in civilization. Even so, what if college has truly become necessary to keep the same level of education that H.S. used to provide? And C. has a point about cost constraints.

Eh, it costs what it costs because it's subsidized. Tell universities the tax payers will pay the tuition for every american, and watch it skyrocket.

subsidies are the reason it costs too much. you tell a university the tax payer is gonna guarantee the loan, and watch tuition shoot through the roof. that's how we got here in the first place.

Because we hand out mandates and refuse to draw the line on profit. On pretty much everything.

If it's public money, there should be cost constraints.

Says the person who wants to route money away from tax payers to everyone else who doesn't want to pay for what everyone else has had to pay for.

That's an argument about taxes, not an argument about how to spend taxes.

The second part of your argument is not a useful emotion. I hope the next generation gets more than I got.

I hope the next generation earns more than I earn.
