Where? And what's the remedy?
Remedy, it's simple, send all their "civilians" we have in our prisons in body bags, otherwise, I'd say that's enough.
Wait what? What civilians of NK do we have as prisoners?
Either assassinate fat kid, or quarantine that shit. Killing civilians (weirdly) is not the answer.

Unfortunately, Cheeto God decided to strike a sweet development deal instead, in return for letting that psychopath continue torturing his people to death. Dos apartments doh.
WTF! Congrats on turning Seoul into a parking lot. You say killing civilians isn't the answer but your suggestions would kill a fuck ton of civilians.

NK is the mentally handicapped kid in class, there is no way to hit this kid and have you come off looking in the right. Your only responsibility is to mitigate the damage done to others.
I cannot believe that there are enough diehards in the upper leadership to actually commit mass suicide like that when he turns up dead. The elite norks actually do leave the country and get western educations. The God-Child thing is only for the starving masses.

I think they'd fall to infighting for control, and mass defections would be rolling across the DMZ within an hour. The problem is that we can't really know, without a large network on the inside. I suspect they're another paper tiger like the soviets.

Or hell, just evacuate Seoul for a week.

Why do you think the Soviets were a paper tiger? Delta IV SSBN, 16 x RSM-54, buh-bye America, turn of the keys.

I actually agree with you on this. Although I would not call them stupid, I would call them paranoid gangster-extortionists who don't care about anything except their comforts and surviving. And have nukes.

If you want to see just how evil they are read about their multi-generational concentration camps. If someone is accused of crimes against the state, not only is that person arrested, but also his wife, their children, their grandchildren, their parents, and their grandparents. The accused entire immediate family, and sometimes they keep going up, down, and out the tree. Oh, sometimes people are conceived, born, and die in the Camps for their relatives "guilt". As for the living conditions, think Gulag, and make it worse.

Well, not the whole time, but certainly by the late 60s or so, they were just waiting for their shit to finally collapse, and it did. The nukes were never paper, but the structure itself was all tinder looking for a blaze. The fact that it didn't implode to revolution speaks of the incredible suppression that was happening inside it. They never had anything but the nukes, and that was enough for a while.

Norks are in the position of 90s USSR - no economy, no strength as a society, nothing holding them back but fear of the state. It's powerful, but not forever.

Already the cracks are showing. They regularly shut down the power to apartment buildings, to search DVD players for illegal (western) media. There is a regular trade in contraband across the southern border, and tv is broadcast all over the place from neighboring countries. It's just a matter of time.

Au contraire, late 60's to late 70's was a boom time for the Soviets, massive expansion, they didn't feel the pinch, until oil dropped back to $20 a barrel in the 80's

I only have Eastern Border and some testimony from former citizens to go by, but they paint a pretty dismal picture.

By the mid 60s, they were falling behind and losing the Space Race, as well as the Arms Race. The general public was certainly not roses, but you're right, they wouldn't have felt the real economic pain until later.

I've yet to hear stories from any of the Believers though. Those who still think it might have worked. A lot of people are nostalgic for the domestic society, but not the life itself. Mostly a sort of wistful rememberance of strong family ties and community.

I don't know how effective their economy was, but they had an entire functioning one. An entire functioning society. North Korea is just a nuke armed kleptocracy with an army attached to it.

But the issue is paper tiger, but their economy was hollowed out, because they were spending 50% GDP on their military, which was not a paper tiger as a result. Sure, belts were tightened, but not from the late 60's to late 70's, they were doing great at that time by their standards, it was about 1985 when the oil bubble popped, taking their economy down with it, precipitously tho, that was pretty much when the wheels came off.

Bear in mind, for the Soviets, the Cold War was an existential war, full war mobilization, but things were actually pretty stable, right up until the oil bubble popped. Don't forget, we're talking about a country that had as much oil as Arabia, and so long as the price was high, that could prop them up.

Actually I didn't say the 2nd quote, that was GFC...

As for NK prisoners, I am sure we have a few hanging around in our prisons... I mean we theoretically have 5% of the world population in our prisons, I'm sure we could find one or two...

Most of the world was hollowed out in the 80's the US was living on a high almost literally... our drug intake was impressive back then. The US was just able to play war longer than the Soviet Union did.
