One of the few interviewees on Kunstler's podcast I make a point of listening to gets SJW'd...

Brings up stuff from this recent speech

I believe most charges against activists as evil "SJWs" as smearing.

Then I read some nonsense like this...

I'm reading comments in blogs and articles from supposed liberals about the need to prevent harmful or bad speech. I think WTF! It's like they are totally unaware of the past. Haven't they heard of 1984, or of McCarthyism, or of book burning?

Another thing about the Tet Offensive, was that it was a lesson learned for the North Vietnamese as much as it was a lesson learned for the American public, there was a naivete about the Tet Offensive, they thought that they were closer to being able to achieve their operational aims than they actually were, they believed that the Tet Offensive would incite the South Vietnamese to join them in a general revolt, the plan was actually called the "General Offensive General Uprising", there were factions in the North Vietnamese government, and the so called "Militant Faction" felt that North Vietnam could not continue to hold out in what was actually a stalemate, under heavy bombardment, without decisive action, and so they concieved the Tet Offensive to "break the deadlock" and end the war right away.

So it wasn't the plan that they were going to win the war by winning the PR war with the American public, they were hoping to win the PR war with the South Vietnamese public, inciting them to turn on the Americans, but the South Vietnamese, particularly in the cities, particularly in Saigon, did not respond to the General Offensive with a General Uprising, and instead either sided with the Americans, or simply declined to become involved.

It was only after the fact, when they saw the reaction in the United States, and how that was achieving their strategic aims even as they failed to meet their operational objectives, that the North Vietnamese and NLF realized that this was in fact the way to win the war, essentially let the American public undermine their own governments war effort, including, most importantly in the near term, the cessation of Operation Rolling Thunder, the bombing of the North.

So there was one critical operational objective achieved by the Tet Offensive, and it turned out to be the most important one, which was inducing the Americans to end the widespread bombing of the North, which the American public had turned against, as being both an attrocity, but also apparently futile, when in fact, it was having devastating effects on the North Vietnamese, and so the cessation of the bombing of the North in the near term, was what really saved the North Vietnamese bacon, that was exaclty what they needed, to hold out long enough, in order to wait the Americans out until they began to withdraw.

Coincindentally, after Tet, the Americans actually ramped up their bombing of South Vietnam, even as they ceased bombing North Vietnam, because after the Tet Offensive the Americans began withdrawing back into the cities, and so the NLF was actually able to run amok in the countryside as a result, and so the Americans shifted to bombing the countryside to try to tamp this down rather than send more troops, and this bombing was what really started to turn the South Vietnamese against the Americans, they weren't bombing the North anymore, but they were now bombing the South with abandon, which simply drove ever people in the countryside into the arms of the NLF, so the Tet Offensive also baited the Americans into doing that, which was another component of the strategic victory.

What also started to happen, as the Americans began to pull back and cede ever more of the countryside to the NLF, is that the American troops who were still out there, began to suffer more and more casualties and ever greater futility in the face of the insurgency, which crippled the morale, and this began to incite the American troops to lash out at the local population, commiting ever more attrocities against them, just out of sheer frustration, and this further exacerbated the situation, throwing even more gasoline on the fire.

So the process was thus; the operationally failed Tet Offensive none the less impels a strategic shift in the United States, but that strategic shift then forces an operational shift in the American military posture in theatre, pretty much right away, LBJ basically gives up the ghost and throws in the towel, not just politically, but also militarily, without further ado, and that operational shift causes the whole ball of yarn to start to unwind, right down to the tactical level, compounding upon itself and picking up steam as it went.

It wasn't just that the American public turned on the war effort, as an entirely political event, but that political shift had immediate effects in the field, cessation of the bombing the North, while shifting to bombing the South to make up the difference, because troops were being pulled back from the forward areas in a general retreat, and the NLF was as a result filling the power vacuum, and without Rolling Thunder, the North is able to start sending ever more forces to assist them, reaching a peak of 20,000 NVA troops going south every month, which all results in the whole American military operational position unraveling, inexorably.

I had a teacher that said that the VC only needed one ten ton truck to make it down the Ho-Chi-Minh trail per week to adequately supply a guerilla force. If that's the case, how do you stop that? Also, I have no doubt the bombing campaign was disrupting the North, but weren't most of their supplies coming in via China? Unless the US started bombing factories in China and the USSR, how could they have really beaten the North longterm? Eventually, they would have gotten tired of bombing and went home, which I guess is exactly what happened.
From what I understand, and it's not much, the American military/government gave deliberately too rosie a picture so when it did go wrong, the public became distrustful and less supportive. Also supporting corruption in the South Vietnamese government and military leadership did not help. Blocking more popular reformers, or at least less corrupt, because you could not control them as well might be good in the very short term. But as with the American public, the South Vietnamese public because less supportive.

As with our handling of the current wars, we traded short term gains for long term losses.

‘Black bloc’ protester pleads guilty to felonies from Inauguration Day rioting
A Florida man with the radical “black bloc” protest network pleaded guilty Friday to felony rioting and assault for his role in the Inauguration Day chaos in Washington, D.C.

Dane Powell, 31, of Tampa was the first to enter a guilty plea on felony charges brought against 212 protesters accused of rioting and vandalizing property during the Jan. 20 melee surrounding President Trump’s swearing-in ceremony.

. . . he faces a possible six years in prison for breaking windows and throwing a “brick, large rock or piece of concrete” at officers after joining a mob of masked black bloc protesters who moved en masse across 16 blocks in about 30 minutes . . . .
...

Carrying hammers, crowbars, metal poles and wooden sticks, the self-described anarchists broke windows at a dozen businesses, including Starbucks, McDonald’s and Bank of America; pulled newspaper stands and trash cans into the streets; spray-painted buildings, and shattered the windows of a police cruiser and limousine.

Federal prosecutors released a superseding indictment Thursday that brought additional felony counts against some defendants, including Powell, which brought an outcry from protesters.

“The prosecutor is using the threat of years in prison to obtain convictions before she has even bothered to make a case against anyone,” said Olivia Alsip, who said she was offered but rejected a plea deal, in a statement. “Many defendants, like myself, believe these cases to be politically motivated and want to take these ridiculous charges to trial.”’

The 212 defendants face eight felony charges: one count of inciting or urging to riot; one count of engaging in rioting; one count of conspiracy to riot, and five counts of destruction of property, said U.S. Attorney’s office spokesman Bill Miller.

In addition, 100 defendants have been charged with another count of misdemeanor assault on a police officer. One was charged with assaulting an officer in a separate incident; two were charged with vandalizing a limousine, and one was charged with three felony counts of assault on a police officer while armed.

Defend J20 Resistance, which was involved with organizing inaugural protests, countered with a Friday statement insisting that protesters were “violently attacked on Jan. 20 by police using chemical and projectile weapons.”

“We haven’t seen a shred of new evidence to support this superseding indictment,” said Sarah Hailey, a defendant arrested in the Jan. 20 protest. “The prosecutor is just using excessive charges in order to scare and coerce us into pleading guilty.”

Defend J20 said that more than 100 of those charged have joined an agreement, Points of Unity, in which they vow not to cooperate with prosecutors at the expense of other defendants.

In a press release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Powell and others threw bricks, rocks and concrete pieces at officers, knocking one unconscious and sending others to the hospital.

“Under the District of Columbia’s voluntary sentencing guidelines, Powell faces an estimated range of 12 to 36 months in prison on each of the two charges,” said the release.

The black bloc has been described as a “anarchist tactic” used by violent, anonymous protesters to blend together and conceal their identities. Black bloc mobs were accused of inciting the Feb. 2 rioting over conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos in Berkeley, California.
Yes, it's all fun and games 'til you get indicted and face prison time. Then the whining about prosecutorial injustice begins.

Clemson Dean Calls For Students To Pass “Intercultural Competency” Test As A Pre-Condition for Holding School Offices
Altheia Richardson, Clemson University’s director of the Gantt Multicultural Center has triggered a controversy with a proposal that all students should pass an “intercultural competency” test before they’re allowed to run for office or hold positions in the South Carolina college’s student government. Clemson students are already required to to take a social justice course following enrollment. Richardson’s proposal has enraged some students as an ideological test for office — a position that Richardson denies.

Robinson presented her proposal to the senate of the Clemson Undergraduate Student Government (CUSG). She told the CUSG “So when it comes to this whole idea of intercultural competence, what would it look like to have a standard for if you’re going to be elected as an officer, or hold a seat within CUSG, that you have to demonstrate that you have a certain level of intercultural competence, before you’re allowed to take that office, or that seat.”

She dismissed notions that her proposal would limit the democratic process: “Well, it could happen before the democratic election process,. If that is set by your Elections Board as a standard, then if you’re vetting the candidates who are running, then it can happen even before the democratic process takes place.”

That seems a rather curious cabining of the democratic process. After all, you are eliminating from the ballot any students who object to the mandatory training. We do not accept such convenient arguments in other countries which control the ballots to bar those who might present opposing views.

Most of the time, most of the protesters are very peaceful. There seems to be a small subset that seems to treat every protest as a reason to riot. Many of them wear black mask to cover their identity. Lovely.
