Re: THE ERA OF TRUMP
You missed the point, though. Our using corn to manufacture ethanol has driven up food prices, but we also subsidize corn. USA produces huge corn surpluses each year. This made a lot of food prices cheap. Our ethanol regulations diminish the impact of that a bit, but it's still not going to totally counter the effect of the subsidies.
But if we didn't subsidize corn, meat prices in particular would get even higher than they are today. Because the real income keeps sliding, and food prices keep going up in general, reducing something like corn subsidies would be a disaster for Americans.
The worst part is that reducing our farm subsidies would result in famine overseas.

If I lost my leg last month, I don't think being congratulated and told it's tremendous is going to make me feel appreciated.ssu wrote:
It's appropriate to congratulate any soldier for their service.
Can you clarify what you mean by this? I think you left out some important words.ssu wrote:

When Truman awarded Desmond Doss the Medal of Honor, Truman said, "I consider this a greater honor than being president."
While it might be going overboard to do that for a purple heart, something along those lines might be more appropriate. I don't think there is any standard or custom involved, however.

There is a reason why meat prices have gone up... it's not just because. It's because corn is now being used more for fuel than food. Oh, and also, look at the price of Popcorn. 10 years ago I use to pay .90 for a bag of popping corn today the price has nearly doubled. The cost of corn if your statement was true would be the same price...Speaker to Animals wrote:You missed the point, though. Also, side note... people say it increased for the cost of oil... that is untrue now since the cost is nearly 1/2 of what it was 10 years ago.

No, dude. You need to take economics courses.
The amount of corn going to ethanol is not anywhere near the additional surplus generated by our corn subsidies.
Because of our corn subsidies that goes to about 10% of our farms, we supply about a third of the global corn consumption. Ethanol doesn't even scratch the surface of the excess surplus generated.
We started these subsidies to eliminate food shortages and to drive down the costs of other food (especially meat). Without the subsidies, meat would be far more expensive today.

The cattle market is still recovering from the drought five years ago. That's part of the reason beef is expensive right now. Pork is relatively cheap though.

Cattle shouldn't be fed corn in the first place. That only started after the subsidies gave us a ridiculous surplus.
Burn the subsidies, and watch the market balance. And by burn, I mean slowly eliminate..

How am I supposed to keep my gains when ground beef is like 15 dollars per pound?

very much agree. Ethanol is a fucking joke. It actually takes more energy to grow, harvest, and create it, than you get from it.
