The cougar I saw in Whistler was yuge, the first moment I spotted it, my brain said "Great Dane", took my brain an extra split second to say "wait, no, cat..."

Ran into gators a couple of times, but they're pretty chill.

Gator, no biggie, it's not a saltwater croc, more like a giant frog, saw a huge one at Eglin AFB, the Americans just shrugged, said they had bigger ones where they played golf.

Tell you what tho, when we used to train in north Florida, didn't worry a bit about gators, but one time we opened the door to this little shack out in the bush, and the whole ceiling inside was a black undulating mass of widow spiders, and another time doing jungle lanes, I dropped down behind this log to change mags, and there was an undulating grey mass of scorpions, and one time I saw a cockroach climbing a tree, and it was the size of a squirrel.

Yeah, that's what makes gators so treacherous. You'll almost step on them about 99 times and they don't bat an eye at you. That 100th time they chase you down and eat you.
So . . . I figure I have about 97 more safe gator meetings left.

The only thing that spooked me in north Florida, was the bugs, black widow spiders in your rucksack, scorpions in your boots, giant cockroaches in your sleeping bag, but most of all; ticks, holee shit with the ticks, go out on patrol, by morning we were covered in ticks from head to toe...

... ticks are horrifying, tiny little specs, but you gotta find every single one, particularly the ones on your nutsack, because if you miss even one, next thing you know it's bloated up into a monster under your skin, like the facehuggers from Alien.

Sho as heck you don't want the lyme disease, if get them all and get them early, no problemo, but if you miss even one and catch it to too late....

I have encountered several Appalachians who tell me seriously that there is, without a doubt, a black panther species living in the mountains. Not like a little Florida panther but a huge cat that is like a giant black panther. Nobody ever seems to kill them, but they claim to have seen them. That would scare the shit out of me right there.

I wonder if the jaguars are back?
A cougar in CA stalked and killed a mountain biker a couple years ago, and they kill a hiker every couple years or so

Cats are nature's perfect land predator. Ever since the general formula for felines evolved a couple million years ago they've more or less been unchanged outside of size and secondary characteristics. I mean, look how similar a lion at the zoo and a housecat are

They are impressive. I've been tracked out of the woods by a Lion after I shot an Elk. Erie feeling. I turned and saw his eyes once. And their cries at night will freak you out. A cross between a woman screaming and a baby crying.
But you get some good hounds on a fresh track and you can get em.
