I am pointing out that there is a difference between then and now, you are refusing to accept that... how come that doesn't amaze me?

This has been debunked numerous times. We remember that immigrants came here and just started speaking English within a few days, but the reality is that the first generation to get here did not learn English as the norm. Their children did.

That's still true today. Mexicans who grew up here do speak English.

My grandmother dad's side (second generation,) knew some Ukrainian but mostly spoke English. She held onto her traditions until she died. Same with my mother's side. She grew up in a primarily Polish neighborhood, where Polish was more the norm than not, and they had their own traditions. Even though the two cultures are very close (due to geography,) each of my parents brought different traditions to the marriage and I grew up with a very blended culture, between Polish, Ukrainian and American. (mostly American.)

you are being obtuse. I grew up in Chicago, where there are parades for everything... Polish pride, St Patrick's Day, Italian Fest, Greek fest ... it goes on and on and on ... we absolutely hold onto our traditions. Cinco de Mayo is no different than St Patty's Day.

We went to Chicago in July. I went to an authentic Polish deli to get real Polish sausage. What were they doing in there? Speaking Polish.

Then we went to an authentic Italian deli to get real Italian sausage. They were speaking Italian.
