If China decides to get uppity on the Asian continent, there is fuck all we can do about that. Those troops in the Korean peninsula are speed bumps. That's literally what they tell you when you get deployed. You can't bring your family because of it.

They maybe sick of Kim's shit but they want to keep him in power so that when he acts up they can go in and calm things down but only after they get what they want from the U.S.A., like getting Trump to back down from a trade war with them. China wants us to keep a worried eye on N.K. for that reason. Kim is just a predictable dog that the Chinese use as a bargaining chip.

Maybe China thinks they can replace Kim with a leader that will still scare the shit out of the US, but will scare them less. In that scenario their bargaining chip would be improved by disposing Kim instead of keeping him around. China still probably wants to keep him in power, but if he gets too uppity, even China has it's limits.

It's about Nukes bro, the US might reduce the troop levels in South Korea, but they aren't leaving altogether, because they don't want to. Same goes for Japan. The US wants to be able to nuke China's nukes, and if the US bailed on East Asia to save money then that becomes a whole lot harder. There are plenty of reasons to stay in East Asia and these reasons sell better to the American public than the reasons for leaving, or the peaceniks would be getting elected in droves as opposed to war hawks.

If the US pulls out of East Asia then it will be harder to execute an effective counterforce strike against China, so they don't want to do it. Plus it will harder to control shipping routes if you make it easier for China to shut them down by bailing on East Asia.
