The NYT, in order to attack this charge, have to attack the credibility of their own paper. Same with Washington Post.

The case is made from the revelations of the NYT and the Washington Post. If it all turns out to be false, then we will know that the NYT and Washington Post were flagrantly lying to the American people.

They really cannot win either way.

And the genius of Trump tying this to the Russian hack investigation in Congress is that, for as long as the democrats obsess over this Russian conspiracy theory in Congress, they will also have to look at the evidence of the Obama administration criminally abusing a FISA warrant to illegally obtain information from the opposition party little differently in effect to the Watergate Scandal.
