It's laziness, more than anything. It's easier to use arbitrary requirements than it is to make difficult judgments about character and what-not.

I also think the regulations/laws that make it so difficult to fire people play a role. Taking risks on potentially unqualified people can be expensive. I don't think that a degree is the same as being qualified, but that's the consensus reality I suppose.
Also companies cant gauge their employees on anything else. Unless they want to get sued and have feds breath down their necks. I have older pharmaxist waxing poetic about the good old days about administering aptitude test pick out the best people to send to pharmacy school or business classes. Used to be cheaper too, could take an 18 year old stock boy and put him on a path now, nope.

Using degrees as a metric isn't all bad, but our system is broken. For too long we have made getting a degree a check in the box with the diploma no real sign of competency or ability to perform. The biggest problem we have with this is when we use a technical degree or advanced degree as a pre-requisite for a Leadership position. I see it all the time in Engineering. And Engineers are notoriously bad leaders. Plus generally speaking, people that get advanced degrees make far better followers than leaders. Yet, throughout our system our organizations demand that higher degree for a Leadership position. Second part of that equation is the quals for a job rarely ask you to prove your have Leadership talents and skills. So we hires Leaders, but don't have the applicants prove they can lead.

Education will never trump experience. Colleges today don't teach anything except how to regurgitate information.

I am a Director of IT/Infrastructure, I have over 20 years of experience in the field, with an Associates in LS with a minor in sciencefrom MCC. (When I got it they didn't have a Computer Science Associates)

I also have a networking, and graphic design certificate from Clark University.

I have worked at several stages of IT, from Help Desk to Network Admin.

I landed this current job by three interviews, the final one wasn't even talking tech, they wanted to see how well I interacted with everyone. Before I left, they offered me the job.

I was competing against four other people, each had their degrees, and were 10+ my Jr.

Not only do I need it know generic IT, network infrastructure, I also need to know security, and some programming, as well as web development.

The reason for all of it is simple, I need to know how it's going to effect and affect our systems as a whole.

Does everyone need to know this? No. Will it help, hell yes. My only suggestion, you can get a degree all you want, if you don't have the time in the field you are wanting to have a career in, you may as well buy a lottery ticket, because you'll have just as much luck landing a good job as your chance of winning the lottery.

Yeah. IT.

Actual engineering really should require a college degree.

Been there, done that. Had to design something for a fluid dynamics testing system for NASA.

Also designed systems for Intel for their dunking tanks for their processors, as well as Tel-Nexx and also re-designed the shoes for a casino.

On a side note I've also worked on placing people in SeaDoo, Boeing, and NASA. So I had to have experience in said field.

You did not write a single line of actual avionics code. GTFO. You don't even know what that word means.

Nobody would let you write that kind of software without a decent education. The liability is too high.

When you design a fluid dynamics system for NASA, there is programming involved. STFU.

And I was programming back in 1980... let's just say that I have some coding experience.
