If you can make your case how your liberty is being reduced from where it was yesterday, and Trump isn’t the cause, I’m more than willing to debate that.
Buried deep in the core of our republic is the Enlightenment understanding that authority is dangerous, and the temptation to use it for low ends is nearly irresistible. To counter this we build institutions and develop customs that hobble our leaders.
My deepest concern is with political movements that view these institutions and customs as a problem that need dismantling.
It is the same reason 'abolish the police' is such a dangerous and stupid position - as if, without the baggage of institutions and bureaucracy, vigilantes would be better able to maintain order in a just way.
I'm not all that anti-Trump. I am pro-institution though, which is probably an even more unpopular position around here than simply disliking Trump, and why some of my arguments seem incomprehensible.
I suspect the core of
our disagreement is that you think Trump is the best defense against dangerous, authoritarian Communists, and I think our institutions are.
