So the British passed the intel to the Soviets, and so the Soviets were waiting for the Germans, defense in depth.

That finished the Germans off for all intents and purposes.

Where can you concentrate to defend in depth, without risk of encirclement?

You have to know where they are going to concentrate their attack.

They don't know that Enigma is cracked, they don't think it's possible, they don't know what a computer is.

And they run straight into a defense in depth which they were not expecting to be there.

How demoralizing is that?

Nobody knew Enigma had been cracked.

Not just the Germans.

The first time it was revealed to the public that Ultra existed and that it had won the war?

Was in 1974.

Nobody had any idea why he was special.

Nobody knew until twenty years later.

I would submit, the age of the conspiracy theory rises in 1974.

You got Watergate.

You got the Plumbers trying to take Ellsberg down for the Pentagon Papers.

Then you find out that they won the Second World War by super technology which they kept a complete secret for 30 years after.

And that's only because the intel had a thirty year timer on the classification.

It theory, they might never have revealed Ultra.

We could have, to this day, just be thinking that the Soviets got incredibly lucky and guessed where the Germans were going to concentrate for their attack.

Because that was the case until 1974, nobody had any idea what Ultra was, for decades after the war.

The other thing about Bletchley Park, is that as soon as the war was over, they shut it down.

That made it much easier to keep secret.

These days, they wouldn't do that.

Bletchley Park would be an entrenched interest which would decline to demobilize.

That would make it exponentially harder to keep secret.

Bear in mind, Bletchley was "does not exist" level of secrecy.

Does not exist, and if you say it does, maybe they task MI6 to put a hit on you to make you disappear.

Secretive as they are, Five Eyes is nowhere near that secret, in fact they reveal a lot about themselves actually.

Even Eddie Snowden didn't tell me that much.

We already knew ECHELON was listening to all the phone calls, back in the eighties.

The internet being wiretapped was par for the course.
