but what they have done is taken a 100 kiloton bomb and downgraded it to 2-5 kilotons

the bomb can be set by a dial, from as low a yield as 1 kiloton, all the way up to maximum 340 kilotons

how does that work ?

the stages of the bomb are moveable internal to the bomb,

the dial moves the components around inside the bomb, changing the yield by adding or subtracting them

when you dial it down, it removes stages mechanically, slides them away from the plutonium pit

when you dial it up, it adds stages, slides them back towards the plutonium pit

when you dial it all the way down, just the plutonium pit fuses

when you dial it all the way up, the plutonium pit fuses the other stages

plutonium pit + lithium deuteride capsule

or plutonium pit + lithium deuteride capsule + tritium booster

so it's not digital, it's analogue 1960's tech, the FUFO is mechanical stage manipulation

so B61 is an all purpose tactical nuclear weapon

you can set it to be just an atomic bomb, or you can set it to be a hydrogen bomb, simply by turning the dial

nuclear bombs come in different flavors, based on how many stages you add

there is pure fission "Little Boy" bomb, the uranium-235 shotgun

there is the plutonium fusion to uranium fission "Fat Man" bomb

there is the plutonium fusion to uranium fission to hydrogen fusion "Castle Bravo" H-bomb

then there is the plutonium fusion to hydrogen fusion only, no fission ERW "Neutron Bomb"

this is why the NATO allies want F-35

because they can deliver the American B61 from the NATO stockpiles

if Poland buys F-35 that gives them a de facto Stealth Bomber against the Russians

and they are so close, they can use it in either role

they could use it in the tactical role, dial it all the way down, drop it on Russian tanks

or they could use it in the strategic role, dial it all the way up to 340 kts and drop it on Petrograd

F-35 + B61 gives the NATO allies an asymmetrical answer to Putin threatening them, they have a trump card

what he was asking for had been the case long time ago

but what he was asking for was a theater thermonuclear war in Europe

handing nukes to the Eastern Europeans is an inherent admission that MAD doesn't work

handing nukes over to the theater level is an inherent counterforce option

all I was saying to Carlin was, careful what you wish for,

because we are already there and it is escalating from here

it's definitely saber rattling strategic warning

the message is that their nuclear submarines are fully tuned up & ready for war

it's genuine teeth far beyond the means of the NK's, this is the big leagues

three SSBN's with a combined 48 SLBM's, upwards of 400 warheads

it's enough warheads to take out the Minuteman III's on the Great Plains in a counterforce

bear in mind they will approach by stealth through Canadian waters to point blank range under the ice

it's blatantly targeted at the CONUS, it's not a survivable second strike profile, it is a first strike profile

that many warheads in snap shoot position under the ice really only serves one purpose, strategic counterforce

in terms of MAD, that's not really what those warheads are for, 200 kilotons is not a City Killer

so those are not aimed at New York City, those warheads are targeted at US military bases
