A couple years ago my wife brought home a 17 year old Ecuadoran girl that needed a home, it was a good experience. She was a foreign exchange student and her placement family didn't work out.

We are social creatures. I've met no one that's truly happy alone, as in they find their happiness, entirely in a self-sufficient way. Maybe this is the American and/or Western ideal, out there, alone, finding all your needs within your own being, within your own activities, but I've never witnessed it, nor read of it.

I find, in almost every single person I meet, that they find their happiness in institutions, in community, in status. It's mostly in status. They want to be respected. They judge themselves by that. How we are thought of by our peers, I've experienced it before, and it did bring happiness, but, as it progressed, I found out that I didn't respect them, and then I didn't respect that they respected me. Their respect wasn't worthwhile. I found out how their respect worked, how to earn it, how to lose it, and it was like the magic trick was explained, so the magic was gone.

But I see something amazing, like dance. You know how hard dance is? I don't know the entirety of it, but it's a kind of ability that is thoroughly impressive, and even though we may understand every part of it, it still impresses. It's not magic, but it still amazes. If one looks at these kind of things, and truly understands these things, with a sober mind and eyes open, you can't help but be amazed by them.

But the institutions I used to be a part of? That I grew up with? They weren't amazing, they were just magic to a child, to an adolescent, and then no longer to an adult. I admit, perhaps institutions, at least from my experience, may be the true reservoirs of happiness, but I'm trying to find one that is amazing even if one knows all the tricks, knows all of the magic. Taking a look behind the curtain and it's still amazing.

Family is the only institution that continues to make me happy. Church would be the obvious social group for this, if you’re so inclined.

Other than that, we are sorely lacking for social groups. Tried joining a moose lodge a few years back - it was pretty much just a shitty bar with lotto games. No semblance of a “group” at all.
