I can see us building a new nuclear powered battleship with rail guns to knock down ICBM coming out of North Korea. A mobile missile shield. Plus with China building islands to extort their neighbors it would be in Japan's, and the surrounding Islands best interest to build their own rail guns on land to obliterate anything China puts on those Islands making the whole thing not in China's best interest to pursue.

And in 67 seconds anything that can move can move a lot, so basically you need a missile that changes course in mid-flight. That's why heavy anti-aircraft artillery got to be outdated. What basically the real issue is just range, how much punch you can deliver and what is the economics and operability of the system. The Mach 7 isn't so important, what is important is range. The real question is that is it more efficient to have such a device that needs so much electricity or simply something conventional.

One doesn't need heavy guns to lob so many artillery shells in a barage if you can have pin-point accuracy.

And here missiles do have some advantage.
