People get creative when it comes to means of using violence. I imagine that there "fashions" in violence, as in all things. Once upon a time, impaling was the fad of the day, then guilliotines. In this day of instant news and media redistribution the fads travel both faster and longer. The hardcore criminals have never been truly part of their own cultures, that's why they're criminals. If normal Eastern Europeans, Brits or wherever wouldn't consider using acid on someone's face because they couldn't rob them, the criminals will. Just like with criminals everywhere.
