At least they showed and stood to deliver, basic minimum requirement, it's like your whole "wrestling is best" thing; we would have broke that up, if all they're going to do is roll around on the ground grappling, "break it up", cause that ain't worth the price of admission, fights in my day, were kind of events, it was known beforehand who was going to fight who at the end of the day, there was a build up all day, fights had to happen afterschool, you couldn't fight inside the school, you couldn't really fight during school, the fighting hour was right after school.

It was fisticuffs and it was sporting, wot? Wasn't just one guy jumping another out of the blue, you had to call people out, and once you did, it wasn't for a wrastle in the grass, because that actually settles nothing. The whole point of a fight was to settle a beef, but it couldn't be settled, unless it was fisticuffs for the win, sporting, and in front of witnesses.

We didn't have too many fights in my high school because it was upper middle class for the most part, and all of us had just endured the forced bussing nightmare of being shipped to the other side of the county to go to gang-ridden junior high schools. In junior high, a fight meant you had to take somebody down fast or it was you going to the hospital, and at best, you needed support or you kept your head down as much as possible. It was pretty bad there.

Although.. there was one year where the liberal education board in Orange County decided our middle class school needed more black people, so they bussed in more blacks from a black neighborhood on the other side of town from the one we already had. Problem was: those neighborhoods were basically enemies. So there were lots of mass fights between those guys for a year before somebody put a stop to that social engineering project too. But it was mainly limited to them on each other.

We were much more out of control in junior high, there was a lot more random violence in junior high, because there was no seniors around to control it, but in HS, there was a pecking order, and the junior and senior jocks pretty much ran the show, led by the football team, if the football team didn't want it to happen, didn't happen, once you we're on the football team, you we're kind of like the constabulary of the school, and the champions to be called out against the other schools as well.

We had dark red leather team jackets, once you had one of those, you were at the top of the pecking order, you were not only protected, but you were bound to protect as well, if you told somebody to knock it off, they'd knock it off right quick, even if they were a skid, even the skids wouldn't mess with the football team.

I am saying, for me, high school was out of the ordinary peaceful. Most of us were really chill after the forced busing experience in our junior high. In junior high, a fight means you have to crack this kid's skull open before he does it to you. There was no in between.

But throughout all that time, most of our violence came from minorities. It was mostly black and hispanic on white violence. Especially in junior high, man. That was a slaughter.

I had one run-in with this girl's Latino boyfriend in my German class in high school. That was about it. All his buddies surrounded me and threatened to kill me. Problem was, it was the language elective, I chose German, and so did all the skinheads. That shit got diffused real fast.

When we had "rumbles", it was generally against the other schools in the area, generally related to football rivalry, you get a football game with both schools showing up to do battle, after those is where you would get big stand offs between crowds of kids.

The only internal to the school "rumbles" was jocks vs. skids, sometimes the two main groups of rutting males, would have to settle things en masse, just to set the order straight.

They had only built our high school a few years earlier. It was really nice. All open door with skywalks and open landscaped areas under a giant dome roof with palm trees. We had an entire building with concert halls and rooms with pianos and other instruments to play. We had a huge library. We had a nice gym.

After being forced bused to gangland, that shit was paradise. Nobody was interested in fighting. The only thing I gave a shit about was how much time there was between when we got off the bus and when my girlfriend's parents came home.

We didn't have the gang thing, gangs was like up in the Jane & Finch area, but up there, they would just shoot each other, they didn't really rumble, it was more like drive by with 9mm handgun type thing.

Same. But in the 1980s, the democrats were into some really fucked up social engineering in which they bussed white middle class kids to those minority schools. My bus commute was about 1.5 hours one way. 1986 was the year they did it to us. Next year they bussed us to what they started calling middle schools, which was mostly hispanic. Then high school put us in our own area.

There was a kind of "gang" in our school area, they called themselves the "Untouchables", but it was like rich kids, and they basically stuck to petty crime, like break-ins to steal stuff, more thrill seeking than business, but they eventually got caught, Metro Police rounded them all up in a big bust, just showed up at all their rich parents homes with search warrants on one night.
