I had this conversation with my boss this morning. The city is spending something like 20 million on new facilities all over the city. Most of them are additions being added to existing structures. They've been having meetings where someone from the city explains it all.C-Mag wrote:jbird4049 wrote:In the comments section, it almost immediately devolves into a game of it "the other party did! the liberal/conservatives are all bad/at fault!!"C-Mag wrote:Citizens brought up dangers to the State of California and the Feds 12 years ago

Some days, the urge for alchohol is strong in me.
Not really the issue. The issue is that it's a lot easier to find funds to create big new structures, and rarely enough to maintain them. Building big new infrastructure is sexy, maintaining them is not.
I knew this shit was going to come out. This is a nation wide problem for us. What happens is the repairs are identified, but then usually put on a deferred maintenance list. Which is a way for an organization to say, we recognize we have work that needs to be done, but we can't do it because of funding.
Finding funding for a spillway that has never been used in 50 years is not easy to do. Easier to say, Hey we need High Speed Rail, or we need a new sports stadium. Whatever.
We need to change our model. It's not working as good as it could.
According to the city, maintaining the buildings won't create growth. Building new shit will create growth, and then in a few years we'll talk about maintenance.

Here is the Rachel Maddow's piece that she reported on the crisis for the Oroville Dam (and she was like the first to do this, btw):

I think you made the key point: maintaining all this infrastructure isn't sexy or exciting enough compared to building new stuff. That mindset needs to be reversed.C-Mag wrote:Deferred Maintenance for US Gov structures is over 100 Billion dollars

Fact is we need as big as an effort as we used on building the interstate highway system and electrical grid.............. AGAIN.
Sounds like a lot of American jobs to me. Win, Win for us.

Remember when we built a new forum instead of repairing the old one?
