This is a question that climate scientists "cannot answer" because it is absolutely non sensical. And irrelevant.

We know that at different global average temperatures, the climate changes in ways that are not friendly to humans or our civilization. Or many of the other species on earth.

The well know and non disputed fact that there earth has been much warmer and cooler in the past, as well as many other climate differences from what we were today, speaks nothing to how the earth is "supposed to be", but evidence shows that the planet is much harsher with different climate regimes. in some eras it has been naturally uninhabitable for humans. But if by our actions we render it uninhabitable for ourselves again, whether the earth is "supposed to be" that way is sort of a moot point, no? The bigger point would bre that we just shot ourselves in the foot as a species, big time.

Or for a different, concrete example, the sea is rising very fast right now. A higher sea level causes: higher and more damaging storm surges, increases in flooding, massive property damage and loss of life, land, and structures, infiltration of groundwater sources of drinking water with sea water, etc. There have been different sea levels in the past, so what is the sea level supposed to be? Who the fuck cares, even assuming you decide that question makes a lick of Sense? We built our societies based on the average sea levels now. A very large proportion of the worlds population and development is increasingly at risk with every cm of rise. The real question is then what do you do about it?

Finally, this question ignores the biggest point, one that deniers almost always do not address or even seem to understand. The rate of change of global average temp is more impactful and dangerous than the actual rise itself. Biology/chemistry/complex systems tend to work that way.

In other words, it's either going to be very bad or even worse.
We're screwed.
We did this to ourselves and we deserve it--whatever it may be, because...
SCIENCE!

As for the op, no, Ivar Giaever is incredibly easy to refute, because he knows nothing about the subject.

This post says it very well, and succinctly, with supporting links, references, data, and graphs.

That's the second time I've read through "debunking" articles by that arrogant fuck. The majority of his counter-arguments are name-calling. It's probably personal because I debate folks who always think that nobody else can possibly understand or do what they do because, you know, special, but so far, other than shooting free-throws, the pride people put in their own exceptional abilities is hubris.

p.s. I've earmarked the actual salient facts he did mention, and look forward to counterpoints.
p.p.s. I've also never been convinced by consensus. It's not the same as Wisdom-Of-Crowds.
