Facebook and to a much lesser extent Twitter are sort of monopolies only because of the network effect. Google is a monopoly because they have patents that make their search results enormously more accurate and complete than any competitor. Google's monopoly is entirely state-created in that respect and can be rescinded the same way.

Fixing Facebook and Twitter I think (for now) requires nothing more than forbidding political discrimination on social networks that are marketed as for everybody. If Facebook wants to limit itself to only progressives and communists, then cool, they should explicitly state that and allow somebody else to make something to pick up all the non-communists who leave/get booted from Facebook.


But more importantly, I think the idea that we need huge centralized social networks is fucking archaic already. We need an open architecture on how we create social network profiles and posts. Then people can join any number of small networks that cater to their specific needs. Those networks all integrate and connect to one another.

Facebook is AOL.

Google, though, they just need real competition. There's no network effect. You can use any search engine you fucking want. You use Google because it works best. I use DuckDuckGo because fuck Google, but I am often looking for something specific and DuckDuckGo is a piece of shit so I just go to Google to find it. Also, if I am looking for images and memes, I have to use Google sometimes because I don't feel like scrolling through endless pages of dick and pussy just to find a meme about frogs.

I think it would make more sense to make conservative users pay for their accounts on social media sites. The reason being, their comments take up more bandwith as space because liberals have to waste time explaining to them why progressive wealth redistribution is essential or why affirmative action quotas are the only way to make sure a business runs properly. Liberal users already understand these facts, so there is less didactic positive crowd retweeting and responding than there would be if the person was a misguided MAGA type, thus less wear and tear on the servers. I think making conservative pay for their accounts and posts would also drive many of them off social media, and create a more honest and moral online atmosphere that is identical to objective reality.

Patents expire 20 years after the filing date, or January 9, 2018 for this patent. Shortly thereafter, all the search engines will probably deploy some kind of PageRank algorithm.
