This kid doesn't look like the kind to go around curb stomping niggs. He looks rather affable and nerdy.

If I had to guess, he was called "coonman" because he liked hanging out with colored people. He probably had jungle fever. This is probably why he dressed up in black face for everyone's amusement.

Late to this party, but I think this lynching is bullshit. The Left would fawn all over a former gang banger who got his life together and ran for office, but there's no statute of limitations on being an insensitive white boy 40 or whatever years ago.

The old school military did hand out nicks like that. General Blackjack Pershing got his in a similar fashion. When he commanded the Buffalo Soldiers, he argued that these guys were an effective cavalry on par with the white units. For that he was actually labeled Nigger Jack. Then he managed to get them deployed to (I think it was) Cuba where they performed very well. The papers took the story and his name was changed to Blackjack Pershing.
