Don't worry folks, Equifax has their best people on it.
Head of Equifax put a Music Major in charge of securing your identities.

This is a case study in media suppression. The fact that we still have a functioning economy this week is pretty astounding.

This is one of 3 companies that determine credit eligibility in the United States. Every single loan going to anyone is checked by these guys. That's why they lost the records of almost every adult in the US.C-Mag wrote:GrumpyCatFace wrote:This is a case study in media suppression. Full identity information - all that's needed to take your identity, and make you a non-person. This is not a matter of an extra credit card showing up on your score - no big deal. If you were to dispute it, you could find that you cannot be verified, because any of your personal details could have been changed - completely. It's your word vs. Fictional You that changed your address, phone, and even medical records last month.
Even better, someone can use that information to get a replacement driver's license, social card, veterans benefits, full ID, all checks out, then provide that ID to a police officer when getting a ticket or arrested. Now that's your criminal record. You can't prove it's not, and you owe County X $300 for your ticket. Fuck you pay me, or go to jail.
You may find that your Social Security checks/food stamps/welfare are suddenly going to another state's PO box. You starve, while it's sorted out, if it even is.
And the Equifax criminals gave them a 6-month head start, so they could cash out first.
The reason we're not in complete chaos right now, is that the average shmuck has no idea how important this is. They have a blind faith that the gubmint is going to sort this out, or the FBI will protect them, or it just can't be that bad.
Soon now, the cases will start coming in. People bitching about not getting loans - nobody cares. Then medical records being "off" - hidden by the astoundingly arrogant medical industry, and assumed to be accurate anyway. Next will be the credit card bills. By next summer, collection agencies will start calling unsuspecting people, asking for money. Those people will protest, confused, but that's never stopped the collectors.
Personal debt in the United States, currently running around 18.5 Trillion, is now in jeopardy. Any loan made since May is already suspect, and can be disputed by the borrower. Worse, the lenders will have no reliable means to verify who wants to borrow from them. They won't accept the risk, and lending will shut down. The government will respond in one of 2 ways - force the plebs to pay debt that isn't theirs (uprising), or declare the debts voided (total collapse).

I understand the dangers of hacking, but just consider it daily risk of technology and something we have to deal with. I put this mostly in a category of things I can't control. I have been considering getting identity insurance though.
I haven't kept up with this story.
You sound as though you suspect Equifax let this happen.

Not intentionally, but they were as complacent as every other large corporation. They don't take IT security seriously, don't want to pay for it, refuse to even consider that the magic government won't protect them.C-Mag wrote:GrumpyCatFace wrote:This is one of 3 companies that determine credit eligibility in the United States. They certainly allowed the hackers a 6-month head start on law enforcement, to cash out their stocks, and prop up that poor woman to take the fall for them. No charges pending, no major investigation, not even a major headline after a week. This is HIV hitting the entire economy, and we're being told to ignore it.
