The Moose are up in Algonquin, it's a few hours drive from here, but Algonquin is full o' moose, they're all over the place up there. Black bears are all over, I don't see many round here, round here it's mostly coyotes, this is farmland where I'm at, bears prefer the woods. Up in Petawawa, where I used to live, which is just on the otherside of Algonquin, that's black bear central, it's crawling with black bears.heydaralon wrote:I don't know much about Canadian wildlife, though I did go to the Alberta side of Glacier National Park when I was a lot younger. This might be a dumb question, but do you encounter any moose or bears in your neighborhood? I don't know how widespread moose are in Canada or if they are anywhere near Toronto. Occasionally in Central Florida there will be a black bear or coyote roaming around in the neighborhood, and the residents will be a few dogs and cats lighter. In my old neighborhood I had an alligator chilling in my cul de sac, which was pretty cool.

Have you ever hunted moose? Also have you ever seen a polar bear in the wild? I know the polar bears would be pretty far north, but you've been up that way hunting seals.Smitty-48 wrote:The Moose are up in Algonquin, it's a few hours drive from here, but Algonquin is full o' moose, they're all over the place up there. Yes, I have hunted moose, and yes, I have seen polar bears in the wild, more than a few times, and yes, that was north of 60.heydaralon wrote:Have you ever hunted moose? Black bear, nbd, polar bear, definitely have to be aware, although, polar bears are scared of huskies, so if you got a dog team, that keeps them at bay.
North of 60, you keep your dog team chained outside, they don't mind the cold, and if a polar comes mooching around, them huskies will get real riled up, and the polar won't mess with that.

Why the fuck would a polar bear be scared of a husky? Those bears are just about the most dangerous land predators on Earth. Tigers are also quite terrifying, and they have wracked up a high body count.Smitty-48 wrote:Yes, I have hunted moose, and yes, I have seen polar bears in the wild, more than a few times, and yes, that was north of 60.heydaralon wrote:Have you ever hunted moose? Do you have any pictures of your moose hunt? That's pretty awesome! Getting the carcass hauled back to civilization seems like it would be a logistical nightmare though. You are sort of like a Canadian version of Teddy Roosevelt with all the hunting you do.

Huskies is just not to the polar bears liking, the polar bear is an opportunist, they're predators, but they're trying to survive, they look at a whole dog team of huskies a snarlin' and a snappin' and a barkin' and a yappin', and that polar bear thinks; nope, I don't I want to mess with that. The polar bear is an ambush predator, but it doesn't want to fight wars.
I'm not actually a big hunter, I've just been hunting here and there, my girlfriend when I was in the army; her daddy and his buddies were big hunters, so I mostly went hunting with them. Now, when you go up north with the army, then you're with the Rangers, the Innuit hunters, so hunting with them, is all part of the arctic survival training program. Pretty much every Canadian infantryman will rotate through the arctic at some point, and hunting seal, running dog teams, dealing with polar bears, the whole shebang, that's all part of the training.

Re: USA Donates Migrants to Canada.
See, the thing about wild predators, whether it's a wolf, or a polar bear, or whatever, fighting is not their thing, if they have to fight, it's only for a mate, they don't fight for prey, they avoid unnecessary conflict, instincitively, they have the instinct that tells them; if I get hurt, I can't hunt, if I can't hunt, I will die. So it's not worth it for a polar bear to get into a battle with a pack of huskies, they're looking for the easy mark, and a pack of huskies ain't that, they're after seals, cause seals don't fight back.
A dog team of arctic huskies; they're fearless, they won't back down to a bear, they got no fear of polar bears, polar bears just rile them up, and when the whole team gets riled up like that, it's pretty damn formidable, so that bear might mooch around, looking for something easier to get at, but so long as that dog team is there, that bear will not cross the line.
I've never heard of nor seen a polar bear take on a pack of huskies, but I can imagine what would happen, it would be one vs. the pack, even if that polar took a few dogs down, they'd be coming at it from all sides, and it would get torn up real bad, a huskie in life or death mode? That's a ferocious beast too.
Anyways, when you see the polar bear confounded by the pack of huskies, you can tell, this is exactly what it is thinking, instinctively. The bear will try to go round them one way, and the dogs will come up to meet it "oh no you don't", then the bear will try to round them the other way, and the dogs coming a snappin' at that "nope, can't go that way neither", then eventually the polar is just like "alright, screw this, I'm gonna go look for some seals..."
Still gotta be aware tho, because them polar bears, they will follow you, for miles and miles and miles, just looking for their opportunity, they're back there on the horizon, tracking you as you go, so you don't wander off on your own, because they could be on you in flash, if you ever let your guard down.
You wander off on your own, even a gun ain't no guaruntee, cause like I said, they're ambush predators, they're clever, they're sneaky, and when they spring the ambush, they're real fast, so you might no even get a shot off, before it's too late. Big as they are, their principle weapon; is stealth.

Re: USA Donates Migrants to Canada.
That makes sense. What do you think would happen if you wore a dog costume on the arctic and snarled at a polar bear? Do you think that would be sufficient to trick it into fucking off? Tigers like to attack from behind, so Indians in the Sunderbans used to wear masks on the back of their heads to scare the big cats off. Nature can be hacked.Smitty-48 wrote:See, the thing about wild predators, whether it's a wolf, or a polar bear, or whatever, fighting is not their thing, if they have to fight, it's only for a mate, they don't fight for prey, they avoid unnecessary conflict, instincitively, they have the instinct that tells them; if I get hurt, I can't hunt, if I can't hunt, I will die. I wonder if an air horn would do the trick.. Not a lot of loud/startling noises on the ice pack, and maybe their ears are too sensitive for it.

I wouldn't bet my life in an air horn, no, it's specific to the dogs, and I wouldn't rely on poodles neither, it's pretty much specific to the breed of dog as well, and to be clear, I find the polar bear to be a majestic creature, I have no interest in killing one, but if you don't have the dog team, and the polar is point blank, I'm going to the .308 at that juncture.GrumpyCatFace wrote:I wonder if an air horn would do the trick.. Oh, for sure. But maybe someone should look into it, similar to electrical shark repellent, etc.Smitty-48 wrote:I wouldn't bet my life in an air horn, no, it's specific to the dogs, and I wouldn't rely on poodles neither, it's pretty much specific to the breed of dog as well, and to be clear, I find the polar bear to be a majestic creature, I have no interest in killing one, but if you don't have the dog team, and the polar is point blank, I'm going to the .308 at that juncture.GrumpyCatFace wrote:I wonder if an air horn would do the trick..
