If I was Trump, and I wanted rid of McMaster, what I would do is actually just sidemote him, firing him has a political cost, whereas simply saying thanks for your service, but now we want you to go back to the Army and be chief of staff there, gets rid of him, without having to fire him, which in a bureaucracy, is how this shit is done.

You don't want to have McMaster in the weeds taking shots at you because you went and trashed him as having commited some sort of firing offence, but if you give him the job that he really wants, you keep him in the fold, which keeps him from coming back to haunt you, because he's perfectly happy to be Army CoS, even though Army CoS has no role in the chain of command nor the White House.

I don't think McMaster actually wanted the PNSA job, so he'd be fine with walking away from it, so long as it wasn't in ostensible disgrace, hence, just treat it as a promotion, which, to an Army General, Chief of Staff > PNSA, certainly when the President is Trump, as of course, none of them have any respect for Trump the Twitter Clown, I doubt they even view him as being the legitimate Commander-in-Chief, regardless of what the Hayseed-Rubes have to say on the matter.
