Both hated and loved that feeling of force flowing through the air, into the ground, up your feet and into your bones, guts and - if the powder yield was high enough - your skull. Somehow that memory feels a tiny bit tarnished now... :violin:

I never got why guy's wanted to be gunners, seems such a boring job, just standing around most of the time and then once in awhile putting some ordinance into this industrial machine but never actually see the effects downrange; meh. Forward Observer is the only artillery job I would ever be able to stomach, but you know, we could call in fire missions from Recce Platoon, so no point in being just a FOO.

Well, I sort of did, sort of didn't choose it, remember? You have no choice when it comes to serving, but you are allowed a choice when it comes to picking which branch of the military you want to go to. Two of my brothers had been artilleryman before that, so that factored into the equation, too. One made a career of it, but moved over to the telegraph troops. The year I was a conscript at the then "King's Artillery Regiment", it had the lowest number of volunteers in several years, there weren't many who were really enthustiatic about being artilleryman.

But still, alot could get pretty enthusiastic about things that made loud boom noises.. As we say here, simple minds, simple pleasures. :D

If I just liked firing the biggest guns, I'd join the Navy.

I see, well, I was the opposite I guess, nothing more intimidating than the silent kill, whispering death in the night, for the surivors who find the bodies in their midst the next morning, big loud boom and then you're just dead? Seems the easy way out.

Reconnaissance, ol' bean, only kill who you need to kill, in order to get the information for the commander, every contact only increasing the chances of mission fail, mission trumps body counts.

North Korea are like the Zerg. They are ugly they are in hordes and they fight dirty. South Korea is the Terren. They are more civilized but they are also capable of fuckery like those ghost nuke things. Actually South Korea is not like Terren cuze their buildings can't move. The US aircraft carriers are kind of like the Terren buildings because they can move. But the US is mainly like the Protoss, because of all our cheap ass advantages and unfair things like shields and whatnot. South Korea is really like none of those teams. They are pretty much nothing at all, in fact. They can be the players who play the videogame.

The North Koreans know that they cannot prevail by conventional means, even their nuclear weapons program is simply a bargaining chip in order to bring the Americans to the table directly, for negotiation free of Chinese interference.

Their objective is long term regime survival, negotiated at the bargaining table.

To launch an all out conventional assault on the ROK, would only invite regime collapse, if all they want is to flatten Seoul, at the existential risk of their regime, they can just use a nuclear weapon, preferably delivered coverty, by nuclear truck bomb, so they could then blame the Americans for it after.

They would deny that it was their nuclear weapon, they would claim that it was an American nuclear weapon "this is what comes of having the Americans on the Peninsula, they brought their nuclear weapons here, and now by their own incompetence, one of them has gone off in your midst.."

They well know the virulent anti-American sentiment in the South Korean left, and they know that such a narrative would fly with them, divide and conquer, by negotiated withdraw of the Americans, incited by the anti-American South Korean Left, who then de facto capitulate to Pyongyang's terms.

If you want safe, go Air Force. Artillery is one of our favorite targets.

If that doesn't give you an Air Force woody, then you need to get deported.

"Chief, I nutted all over the cockpit."

"What the fuck? Why, captain, why?"

"Look at the VTR footage, chief."
