Furthermore, we are probably losing at least one entire carrier group if we go to war with a major power. A carrier group is the dreadnought of our time. It's only a matter of time before, like the Bismark, one of them sits still at the bottom of the ocean.

Huge boondoggle. Huge strategic blunder.

Sail around waving your dick high if you want. Eventually somebody is going to sink your shit.
Grumps thinks the entire navy is obsolete right now and can be replaced by the air force and army. Even in few decades that won't be the case. It's wise to not spend all your naval resources on carrier groups, but the navy will play an important role in the military mix for the foreseeable future.
Well, you've certainly made your opinion of me clear. Now how about a counter-narrative? What actual military use do you see from 11 carrier groups sailing around the world in this day and age?

Do you see a terrible threat to our "shipping" lurking over the horizon that would be neutralized by naval air power? Do we need naval missile launchers to smite the remote airfields of the world?

One of the coolest things Obama did was use the Navy to take out those Somali pirates. That made me proud to be an American. I think it was a pretty evenly matched Naval Battle too. After all, it was an away game for us.

Never heard about it. I was aware that we did some patrols in the area, and they went into hiding. Presumably, the Somali government was pressured into raiding their camps. Was there more to it?

Remember that movie Captain Phillips? Do you remember the epic Naval Battle in the end? It was like the battle of Lepanto out there.

Something about a sick sniper shot across bows and a dead Somali.

Right between the eyes.

They should have given that poor fellow some iodine. He had a goiter the size of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Just soak it in hot water for a while and pinch the shit out of it in one hand. Lance it with gusto and an exacto knife. Get the whole fucking stone and root out.

Pisses me off when I see people with those.

Aircraft carriers are great at taking out naval threats posed by surface vessels since they lack the range to hit the aircraft carriers back. They also can serve as a mobile airbase.

It really isn't hard to think of ways that carrier groups serve a useful function for the US military, unless you are only looking for reasons why they aren't as useful as they used to be.

On paper, super-battleships like the Bismark made a ton of sense too..

But.. when you build shit like that, your enemies tend to go out of their way to sink it, all hands lost.
