Ukraine has an inordinately large number of missing in action. Many of these are dead, but because the Ukrainian system delivers pay to the Battalion Commanders when you lose soldiers its to your benefit to report them as missing, not killed. If they are missing the Battalion Commander still gets their pay and the family does not get death benefits. I can't think of anything more corrupt than that. Ukrainian defectors to Russia and deserters may be a sizeable portion of that too. Reporting them as missing in action would have the safe monetary effect and keep that Battalion Commander from getting in trouble.

Personally it would be entertaining to see Western police forces hunting the guys down and dragging them back to Zelensky for a quick trip to the trenches.
