You’d be amazed how attached people become to their native land.
Protecting ones land and way of life is a primal instinct. It would take powerful incentives to over ride that impulse.

Look, the Midwest and south are full of half-dead towns with few employment opportunities. No one is flocking to those cities. But those cities are there for anyone who thinks big employers have ruined their lives. Thousands of broke ass, half-vacated, boarded up downtown shop, towns. That’s what “no major employers” looks like.JohnDonne wrote: ↑Mon May 21, 2018 6:07 pmI hear what you’re saying, but there has to be a balance if you are talking about what’s in the low income people’s interests. If you have to move away from the place where the benefits of growth are happening, those benefits of growth aren’t going to do you any good. Rents increasing 56 percent in five years in an already expensive city is a pretty clear threat to anyone with low income wages. I can see why one would consider that danger greater than the potential benefits of growth.
Gambling to turn Seattle into that because “Man, I don’t want to move to Renton, Kent, Federal Way, Tukwila, or Bothell and commute” is a bad wager. There’s more low income people in a major metropolitan area than there is affordable housing units. You’re actually gambling the prosperity of the area for terrible chances at landing subsidized housing.
That’s selfish. Voting to imperil everyone so you can have a lottery ticket for section 8? You’d do infinitely better biting the bullet on the commute and keeping the prosperity and opportunity in the region while you hone your marketable skills.

Nonsense, why would I move when I can take from people to support my lifestyle?

I think you could make that argument.DBTrek wrote: ↑Mon May 21, 2018 6:18 pmLook, the Midwest and south are full of half-dead towns with few employment opportunities. I’m doing the same thing in the same place as my great-great-grandfather.
I doubt I’d be amazed.

Like the incentives that brought people to the US in the first place?
Better jobs, money etc?

Yeah, just like that, actually.Viktorthepirate wrote: ↑Mon May 21, 2018 6:40 pmLike the incentives that brought people to the US in the first place?

Which is why I agreed with DB, it's definitely arguable that the native americans would have fared better had they more quickly adapted to the customs of the white man, moved from the lands that the US government needed, and attempted to compete in their economies.
But for some, you can't put a price tag on home, community, culture, and way of life.

Least they could do is bitch a little less about their income and living situation if they are unwilling to change it.

You seem to have a good niche there.
Certainly if my family was the best oxen yoke makers... I wouldn’t still be doing that.
On the other hand, the great, great, great grandpa owned a water mill.
Times change. You have to adapt.
My families business is a lot like a family farm.
It works as long as family are willing to accept less or a disaster.
I work 300 days a year. Many wives wouldn’t put up with that.
Never been an owner that got divorced. Don’t believe in those.
A big reason we still exist is because we accept a low R-o-E. Eventually, there will be a moore furniture owner that wants the big pay out from mega Corp. and that will be that.
Or a generation that doesn’t want to do it. My brother and I both make less consumption income at Moore Furniture than we would at Boeing or Bank of America respectively. And I have plenty of cousin that spend more than I do, year in and year out. Sure, we will probably die worth more than them, but we will never consume much as they did.
As far as a business model, largely the only way we could lose is through something self. Either our own, or some JPMorgan hate us so much that he is willing to lose millions to close us. We already sell furniture at the same price as wayfair, and appliances for the same price as Lowes. There really is no inherent reason for our customer base to not choose us.
