Former President Barack Obama isn't yet sporting a Biden 2020 hat, but that doesn't mean he isn't paying attention to his former vice president's campaign.

Although Obama has gone to great lengths to not endorse an individual in the 2020 Democratic primaries, he has reportedly been more involved in Biden's camp than he's let on. Obama has gone so far as to request briefings with Biden's team to discuss strategy, including one meeting before Biden announced his candidacy in April, reports The New York Times. In some of his meetings with Biden and Co., Obama has tried to emphasize the importance of Biden expanding his inner circle with younger voices, reportedly telling Biden his advisers are too old and out of touch.

Despite his watchful eye, Obama has been wary of Biden seeking the nomination. At one point before Biden entered the race, Obama reportedly said: "You don't have to do this, Joe, you really don't." Biden, who benched himself during the 2016 election, responded by saying he couldn't miss another shot to beat President Trump.

In March, Obama reportedly told Biden's advisers that they needed to make sure the former Vice President didn't "embarrass himself" or "damage his legacy." Coming from Biden's supposed best friend, that one's gotta hurt. Read it at The New York Times. Marianne Dodson

Your own article says he's on Team Biden, as an unofficial adviser, yet you somehow think he'll never endorse him? What the fuck are you smoking?

You see what you want to see, just because Obama has a few concerns doesn't mean Biden ain't a real candidate. Biden knows he's a gaffe machine, telling Biden to be careful, not to gaffe too much, is not a scathing remark, he probably told him that all the time when Biden was his VP.

Obama will endorse him once he locks up the nomination, you are making mountains of molehills.

Obama is on Team Biden, or he wouldn't be discussing campaign strategy with him, derp.

Sanders, Warren or Harris would fuck up the DNC a lot worse. Obama Knows, that's why he's helping Biden instead of them.

Unofficially is a close as Biden could realistically expect. This a not a sign of Biden's doom, you just pretend everything is Biden's doom, even when it clearly isn't.

Joe Biden’s allies are pushing for a return to the “rose garden” strategy less than two months after the former vice president abandoned the notion and began campaigning actively.

Biden, who has retreated from the public eye after a hellish week of gaffes consumed his campaign, is being pushed to retool his schedule to limit public appearances and thereby cut down on the opportunities for verbal missteps. In particular, many are advising the 76-year-old former vice president to curb the number of events he does in the afternoon and evening – the time of day Biden has been most likely to say something embarrassing.

At the moment, the push is being made under the guise of giving Biden “more down time” before the race heats up in the fall ahead of the early primary contests.

“He needs to be a strong force on the campaign trail, but he also has to pace himself,” one of Biden’s allies told The Hill this week.
In the wake of such gaffes, renewed doubts over Biden’s capabilities and fitness to run a modern presidential campaign began to emerge on the left. Instead of allaying such doubts by being open and increasing the candidate’s public schedule, as some on the left proposed, Biden’s team sent him on vacation and pivoted to attacking the media for pushing their own “narrative” when it came to gaffes.

The messy response and simmering doubts drove some of Biden’s allies, outside of his campaign apparatus, to push for a return to the “rose garden” strategy.

Many argued that, with the danger having passed from fellow 2020 Democrats, it was time to limit the amount of damage Biden could cause on his own. Some, though, admitted the advise was likely to be ignored, especially as Biden has already been criticized for doing less public appearances than other candidates.

Biden should stay out the spotlight as much as possible. All he has to do is not commit political suicide via epic gaffe and he wins, that's the right strategy, he just needs to stay out of his own way.

It's the truth, there is no spin. Biden is a gaffe machine, Biden is aware he's a gaffe machine, giving him more opportunities to put his foot in his mouth is the easiest way for him to lose, might as well minimize those chances, it's just common sense.

If Biden just gets out of his own way, he wins. Biden Knows.

It's a not a sign of weakness to acknowledge he's a gaffe machine, everybody already knew he was a gaffe machine, the campaign pretending he isn't a gaffe machine would not be a sign of strength, that would be a sign of weakness.
