If someone says the state is the only source of inefficiency / externalities, they are wrong. That's trivial. So what's your point?

That was pretty much my point... but I am not sure how trivial it is.

It is at least plausible that income inequality perverts markets... much the same way monopolies are said to. Accepting that doesn't have to lead one down an inexorable path to a total command economy.
