At a dinner party the other night I flippantly mentioned that our local library has mission creep (xbox games, thousands and thousands of movies/TV series, etc) and almost everyone was aghast at my comment.

I didn't even think that was controversial. Why is the govt in the free-rental video game business? Why is it govt's domain to ensure multiple copies of a billion seasons of sex in the city is available?

Strange how the overton window moved on this stuff, at my dinner party,, apparently anything less than having all media available for free at the library was cold hearted
Who the hell has dinner parties.. oh right. :P

How are xbox games and Sex in the City different from the billions of pages of books they currently have available? There's no shortage of trash novels in a library...

Pitch me an alternative for unbiased, semi-intelligent news from a commercial source. They will always cater to the lowest-common-denominator/consumer. NPR isn't much better, but it is a big step in the right direction.

Where do you get a variety like Prarie Home Companion, Celtic/Georgian/Bulgarian music shows, Wait-Wait-Don't-Tell-Me, and all the others? Even satellite radio has nothing close, other than BBC World - which is pretty much news only, and is also funded by a government.

Prove me wrong then. Are they working for profit? They do have a couple of little advertisers...

Which of the 7 major media groups are they part of?
Yes, they make a profit and sell advertisements: https://projects.propublica.org/nonprof ... /520899215

I'm not saying they need to be destroyed for being liberal but I think it's ridiculous that our government gives them our money while NPR and PBS are selling advertisements. It's also just obvious that the current administration should cut them off while the broadcasters continue to suck off the previous administration and attack the current.

edit: they wouldn't just disappear, their advertisers and big donors can keep it going if they want to

You might as well try to justify free steaks and blow jobs as public goods as public "news."

Ah, but wouldn't you be railing against them for wasting government funds by not advertising office chairs and mattresses?
Also, there are no actual "commercials", and advertisers aren't allowed to broadcast their own content. They get a brief mention by the NPR staff and nothing else.

Somehow I doubt that Herman Miller has a strong influence on their content.

As for profits, I need to see a source.

You literally responded to my post that included a source to their tax returns. Follow the link and read their form 990 if you think they aren't making money.

My local PBS station shows commercials for Consumers Energy, as well as for oil companies and financial institutions. They're the same commercials that are shown on "normal" channels. They even show them during pledge week.

Looks like some years they make a profit, and others they lose $50m. They have annual expenses of around half a billion, so that sounds pretty much like a non-profit. Makes sense they'd keep something in a war chest, and the money isn't going anywhere.

Also, looks like almost half of their income comes from the goofy mattress mentions etc. That's saving a few hundred mill that the government would otherwise have to pick up.

I don't see an issue here.

Well, you could subsidize prostitution and put all those single mothers to work in a work program. Let's add it into Ryan's bill.
