You see, initially, America was hemmed in by the British Empire to the north and a Franco-Spanish Empire to the south. America tried to take the British Empire out first, and failed (woot-woot!), but then turned to taking the Franco-Spanish empire out next, and succeeded, and that essentially offset the British.

Then a Confederacy arose from within in the ranks, which threatened to take the former Franco-Spanish Empire for itself, in cahoots with the British to the north, and so that had to be stopped at all costs. Once all that was sorted out, America started dealing with the situation beyond the continent. . .
