How can you not look suspiciously at the fact that around the approximate time Facebook really started to screw with news feeds, this divergence in what had been a decades long trend of improving race relations happens?

True - is it sinister though, or are they just trying to ensure they don't piss off their users with "offensive" content? Give 'em what they want. This is how we consume news, now. Is that Mark's fault?

It goes both ways, though. YouTube is overwhelmingly used by Gen X as far as I can tell, and it's pretty far right wing overall no matter what the fuck Google tries to do about that.

These companies try to control the narrative, but if the user base isn't having it, they only fail. I think more than anything what you see on social networks is a product of the userbase. Facebook is overwhelmingly soy boy and feminist. YouTube is red pilled as fuck now.

It's the way of things.

If you look at voting results, metrics show that minorities move in a much tighter herd, where only 10-15% wonder from the pack.

That means if the leaders of that pack decide they should move towards a cliff, fewer are going to be able to recognize the danger no matter how far the fall.

If you listen to the thought leaders in the black community they are tearing a path to the Grand Canyon with no hesitation.

I hear ya, my point is that you may be right in certain platforms being preferred by certain demographics, but particular segments of our society or more aligned with their thought leaders and this is driving the divide.

Imagine how few folks in Compton actually reflect on the Colonial Period and how that impacted their current station? At best, they came across a internet meme.

Which brings us back to Facebook, which to this day seems at best to dimly understand how the news business works, as is evident in its longstanding insistence that it's not a media company. Wired was even inspired to publish a sarcastic self-help quiz for Facebook execs on "How to tell if you're a media company." It included such questions as "Are you the country's largest source of news?"

The answer is a resounding yes. An astonishing 45 percent of Americans get their news from this single source. Add Google, and above 70 percent of Americans get their news from a pair of outlets. The two firms also ate up about 89 percent of the digital-advertising growth last year, underscoring their monopolistic power in this industry.

Facebook's cluelessness on this front makes the ease with which it took over the press that much more bizarre to contemplate. Of course, the entire history of Facebook is pretty weird, even by Silicon Valley standards, beginning with the fact that the firm thinks of itself as a movement and not a giant money-sucking machine.
