They are platforms designed mostly for signaling, not really discussion. The purpose of Facebook and Twitter is for people to shout hey look at me look at me I am one of the virtuous people! and to unleash vitriol against anybody who expresses dissent.

The PRC is probably jealous as fuck of Facebook. It's the perfect establishment tool to manufacture and enforce consent. It's basically puritanism online. Most people are shouting how they are down with the puritan program, and anybody who is caught not expressing that or dissenting from it is attacked, punished, shamed, and shunned.

"Weirdo" is a great word: it's not derogatory yet it implies serious difference from the norm. I love to use it in the phrase, "The Left is women, minorities & weirdos."

I think the real problem with Facebook and Twitter is that they amplify all of the stupid conversations and opinions that we used to have and share with only our immediate friends and family. It makes it seem like there is some sort of tsunami of idiotic ideas that is new, and overwhelming, but it is an illusion.
I have thought and said all kinds of unbelievably stupid shit, but there wasn't the option to broadcast it to the whole damn world. I am morally certain the same can be said for just about everybody.
Young people getting all riled up over bad ideas ain't new, and neither are the often slippery definitions of political ideas.

The Internet lowers the returns to distributing facts, while social media increases the returns to distributing signaling goods.

While institutions selling access to facts (newspapers, mags, TV news, etc) have lost their business models, the model for distributing opinions and signaling goods is booming.

I bet your facebook feed right now is at least half virtual signaling goods -- political, religious, and tribal affiliations.
