The closest we can get is with some of the cognitive models. Personally, I think a major problem is the embodiment problem, but beyond that, we just don't know how to do it.

Soft AI is cool, but it's not what a lot of people think it is. Don't confuse complexity with intelligence.
Who gives a shit about general AI? Get off this idea if it's not an artificial human brain, it ain't worth jack. That's completely backwards, the artificial human is the useless one, we don't need Siri pontificating the meaning of life, we need Siri to manage our stock portfolio, tell us where the kids are on their way home, and order me another case of red for the month, chop chop. A thousand weak AIs are far more useful to humans than a single general AI. It's called compartmentalization, you don't want to end up with AM Hater of Humanity, you want Allied Mastercomputer, dutiful servant crunching killing numbers and giving you the output.

Humans, at least for a good long while, are still the ones who have to make the "big, philosophical" decisions or whatever, you just want a bunch of dumb AIs to help inform those decisions. Cut out a ton of yes-men and sycophants and wannabe evil viziers from the equation, that's the goal here.

I was not speaking of simply creating artificial humans. I was speaking of creating something truly intelligent. Soft AI is a collection of tricks. Nothing more. It's awesome. It makes our lives better. But it's not getting us anywhere closer to building machines that can adequately manage our societies.

Hey..

What poker app do you love for your smartphone?

I don't want to play with real people online... too slow and too much time commitment.

Just refine my skill against the app... for the occasional live game.

There was some discussion of a Monthly poker night amongst us, I'd like to reopen that if we can find a site which is international. It would have to be play money as the puritan Americans can't play for real money. Bragging rights would have to suffice.
My online poker has been suffering recently as I spend too much time on here. :(
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

I was rather hoping one of the younger and more internet savvy guys/gals would find a site we could all use.

Sounds fun. My laptop is down and I'm not downloading any apps for my phone until I cave and buy the $15 apple card to pay them back the dollar I owe. So, I'm a maybe.
