It's about culture, Kath. No matter where you think your political views are right now, I guarantee they will gravitate around how you were acculturated. It's very difficult to escape that.

This is why northern republicans are not like southern republicans, and southern democrats are not like northern democrats. The political parties are like the tectonic plates that drift above a cultural mantle.

Or another way of looking at it.. it's like how a woman will find a reason to argue just because she wants to fight. The ostensible reason is really beside the point. That's how our politics are.

You've gotta admit that this time is different, Kath.

Oh, completely different!

It was NMoore who said that we're not going to get out of this mess until we elect a clown. After that, peeps will be scrambling for actual leadership. I'm hopeful that this guy is the clown who gets us to actual sanity.

Reading reviews about it right now, looks great. Offer any commentary?

Edit: looks like a decent quick recap perhaps for anyone curious like me:

It's interesting in that he reframes American history in terms of competing interests of these nations. So when he discusses what went on in the Civil War, he talked about it in terms of different nations of people (Deep South, Appalachia, Midlands, Yankees) instead of the bogus, propagandistic frame you learn in school.

We are indoctrinated to not consider culture. It's part of the system of civic nationalism and it is largely used by the Yankees to suppress nationalistic sentiments in the rest of the American regions (in my opinion, anyway).

But Woodward is a Yankee. He is good at writing about all the negatives in Southern and Appalachian culture, but not so good at seeing the mote in his own culture's eye.

This is the battleground:

The ostensible political issues are transitory and nothing more than excuses, really.
