Glad to see you are finally recognising the dangers of poor food handling practices.

Schools should ensure that both canteen and packed lunches are safe to eat.

Not really sure why this needs stating and still not seeing evidence that banning certain foods is financially motivated.
In fact, outbreaks of food poisoning just emphasises the need to set up strict guidelines for school meals.
BULL FUCKING SHIT!

The standards for meat sent to schools and retailers are so disparate that ground beef from a plant with a salmonella outbreak this past August was recalled by retailers, but ground beef from the same plant produced during that outbreak was still shipped to schools.

And in the case I proved, they failed. So what's your excuse for large government, when it fails to protect those that are most at risk? As far as I can tell, nothing because there is no excuse whatsoever that can be given unless you are the human pretzel.

And the stuff at home is better treated, maintained, etc than what is at a school... and yes I know first hand because that was one of my first jobs while at my high school, working in the kitchen.

I can tell you right now, most school systems are not given the best foods out there to begin with. What they get at home in most cases is healthier than what can be dolled out at school any time of day.

I'd say that schools who fail to adopt best practice should be inspected more regularly and fined if necessary.

Less regulation won't help, no matter what the lolbergs tell you.

You know why schools don't buy local? Regulations.

I will agree with the former, if the school cafeteria is making lunch it should be held to the same standards as any commercial restaurant business, get yearly health/safety inspections, etc.

The latter is complete BullShit. The school is not and should not be responsible for packed lunches brought in by the children. That is the parent's responsibility, not the "state's". Besides, if you are so worried about "food poisoning outbreaks" (an "outbreak" denoting multiple food poisoning "victims" getting said poisoning from the same source) which seems more likely:

A) An "outbreak" from multiple children getting their meals from a single source (the school) where the meals options can all be exposed to a pathogen in one shared kitchen, with one common vendor for the supplies.

B) An "outbreak" from multiple children getting their meals prepared from multiple sources (each families kitchen) where pathogen exposure would be unique to each kitchen, with disparate (possibly dozens) of vendors (grocery stores) for the supplies.

??? It should be blatantly obvious that "B" is far less of a risk of an "outbreak" at the school than "A".

Why the emphasis on "outbreak" ?

The school is responsible for the safety of all it's students while on the premises.
If parents are sending kids to school with unsafe sandwiches then the school would be in dereliction of its duty of care if it just let the kids eat them.
