You should feel bad for them, Montreal is toxic as fuck. Every trade they make is retarded, they overpay their best players and hurt the team, Marc Bergevin is the dumbest GM since Mike Milbury, how he still has a job is beyond me. The Habs have no management, no centers, no prospects and a toxic media atmosphere, a quadruple whammy of incompetence dragging the franchise down.

The Habs simply suffer from the Canadian Franchise Disease, stuck in the mediocre middle, not good enough to win the Cup, not bad enough to get the high end prospects.

It's not Bergevin, it's Molson's, they're the same as the Leafs were, they won't let the team bottom out for a few years in order to reload, so Bergevin is forced to try to make something with nothing, that's where the rabbit hole starts.

It's all well and good to say draft and develop and find gems in the later rounds, that is necessary, but not sufficient, case in point, Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Kadri, Rielly, are all top ten first round pick Center, Center/Winger and a Defenceman, if you don't bottom out, you can't stock up on those types of players.

The other aspect of the CFD is a lack of patience, that's what Edmonton suffers from, because it's not the case where you just get a lottery pick and presto, the very next year you're a Cup contender, you have to stick to the process and actually build a team, you can't just go flipping Taylor Hall because you want instant results, Connor McDavid in of himself, is not enough, you need to draft and develop a whole supporting cast to go with him.

All the Canadian franchises are toxic, with the exception of Toronto, ironically, I used to call it the Leafs disease, but the Leafs disease spread to all the Canadian franchises, except now, thanks to Rogers and Bell and Brendan Shanahan, the Leafs have cured themselves of the Leafs disease, but everybody else still has it, including Winnipeg, because even tho Winnipeg is stocked up right now, the owners there would be loathe to bottom out again if it doesn't work out.

Some of the American franchises also have the Leafs disease gene, the Rangers have it, Philly has it, Chicago has it, Boston has it, Detroit is catching it now, in the states you could call it the Rangers disease, the Rangers being the Leafs of the USA.

The reason why the Pens are the model franchise in the US, is that they don't have the Leafs/Rangers disease, five cups in two generations, because they bottomed out, before they got Lemieux and Jagr, they absolutely sucked for awhile, but that became their model, and so then they did it again to get Crosby and Malkin.
