Carter and Clinton are exceptions to rule, and it's because they were Southerners that they flipped the South, not because they were Democrats. Just because Southern Democrats still exist doesn't mean that most of them didn't flip parties beginning with the Southern Strategy, that isn't a myth.Speaker to Animals wrote:What was Bill Clinton?

The transition occurred over decades as a result of countless different influences, not because of one political campaign. That's a fairy tale.StCapps wrote:Carter and Clinton are exceptions to rule, and it's because they were Southerners that they flipped the South, not because they were Democrats. True, it didn't change overnight, never said that it did though. Nixon and Reagan did exploit the changing circumstances though, there is no denying that, and so has every Republican POTUS since then.Okeefenokee wrote:The transition occurred over decades as a result of countless different influences, not because of one political campaign. So you are claiming that, before the 1960s, the conservatives were the democrats and the progressives were the republicans??

A politician with their finger in the changing political wind? Perish the thought.StCapps wrote:True, it didn't change overnight, never said that it did though. I am claiming that before the 1960s, the South mostly voted Democrat and ever since they've mostly voted Republican. A lot of former Dixiecrats flipped parties, and the Republicans welcomed their votes with open arms.Speaker to Animals wrote:So you are claiming that, before the 1960s, the conservatives were the democrats and the progressives were the republicans??

1. How many votes does, "the south," get, or would it be more accurate to say people in the south?StCapps wrote:I am claiming that before the 1960s, the South mostly voted Democrat and ever since they've mostly voted Republican.Speaker to Animals wrote:So you are claiming that, before the 1960s, the conservatives were the democrats and the progressives were the republicans??
2. Are we talking about the same people who voted in 1861, 1950, and 2018 living for hundreds of years, or was there some turnover making this continuity idea a little delusional?

1) It is more accurate to say "people in the south" sure.Okeefenokee wrote:1. 2) There was some turnover, but a lot of "people in the south" simply flipped parties from Democrat to Republican, and there is plenty of continuity. Some turnover doesn't negate that.

A better way of putting it is that southern Christians abandoned the democratic party when the democratic party abandoned God. Most of the racist garbage that happens in southern politics is still perpetrated by the democrats. Same as it ever was in every region of the US.

A lot of those southern racists flipped though, so that is less true in the South than it is in the North, post-Southern Strategy. Plenty of racists in both parties, the Democrats don't have a monopoly, and they never did.Speaker to Animals wrote:A better way of putting it is that southern Christians abandoned the democratic party when the democratic party abandoned God.
