+1 If I had the time I'd drive instead. It was worse flying as a family when the kids were little because we'd always get selected for the extra search. We got even once though. Youngest child is a tough cookie - pretty much born to rule a third world country with an iron fist. When she was 2, we got her new light up shoes to entice her to get on the plane. The extra search people tried to take her shoes off.

You see so much more when you're driving and get such a better idea of the size of this world.

I love driving, i just hate when time gets in the way of it.

And like i said earlier, after having to fly weekly for like 5 years I'd be happy never setting foot on an airplane again.

I've honestly never had a bad experience flying, not even a particularly bad delay, not even on Air Canada, never had a problem with any staff, always been treated very well, a couple of times I've even been on a plane where I knew the pilot was fighting it all the way down and he still managed to get it on the deck, one time coming into Toronto we were landing in a thunderstorm, and it was getting dicey, but the guy still managed to nail the landing, we were taxiing and you couldn't even see the terminal through the rain, then the flight two planes behind us actually went off the runway and crashed.

I sleep through most flights, so they seem very unenventful to me, all I care about is take-off and landing, that's the where the trouble starts, so long as the guy calls the ball and traps the three wire, I'm happy.

I really don't enjoy the experience whatsoever. I have a moment of joy when we're at cruising altitude with a clear cloud deck, but I'm secretly waiting for an equipment failure to send us plummeting.

It's weird, because I know a great deal about airplanes, and flying them. Probably 1,000 hours put into Flight Simulator as a kid, full VTOL navigation, weather realism, and all. I just can't make myself unaware that I'm in an soda can hurtling at 500 mph, 6 miles off the ground.

Statistically, it is safe, but you only have to sit around and have a few drinks with some pilots, before you realize that there's a lot more near misses than you think.

One time, back in the 70's, we were coming into LAX, and suddenly the pilot just nosed over, hard, and a couple people flew out of their seats and hit the luggage racks, some small plane got in the way, he just comes on the speakers and says "sorry about that folks, but that's why the seatbelt light is on."

That "planes are statistically safer" woo woo is totally fallacious nonsense. What they do is compare accidents per mile traveled between driving and flying. But when you are flying, most of the risk is at take off and landing, and aircraft cover far more ground. You have to calculate the risk by frequency of flying rather than distance traveled. It comes out to be technically a bit riskier than driving, but not by much.

I never minded the flying aspect. It's fun. It's the inner city youth wearing badges pulling my pants down under the guise of a pat down that piss me off.

I like to fly, but airliners are boring, once you've flown military, with your feet dangling over the side, or the rear ramp dropped at 15,000 ft, airliners just don't cut it anymore, I like tactical helicopters, that's the best way to fly, low and fast, nap o' the earth.

Airliners just put me to sleep, five minutes after we take off, I'm out, next thing I know, the stew is waking me up for landing, I think its the white noise, just knocks me out, Zzzzzzz.
